Our History

Two Associations, One Story

Golf has been organised across the northern counties of Wales for the best part of a century. In January 2026 the two associations that carried that tradition joined together as the WNCLGA, continuing all the events their members have always enjoyed.

The Welsh Northern Counties Golf Association was founded in about 1934 and included members from both the Caernarfonshire & Anglesey and Denbighshire & Flintshire areas, covering the whole of North Wales. Its Captain was chosen from the C&A and D&F areas, alternating each year. It ran the Purves Bowl and Purves Mixed Foursomes, held one Championship meeting a year – usually at the Lady Captain's home club – plus two County Matches, and ran junior events until 2023.

The Welsh Northern Counties Veteran Ladies Golf Association was founded in 1955 and was open to ladies of 55 and above who were also members of the C&A or D&F and the WNCGA. Like the WNCGA it covered a large area, taking in members from the whole of North Wales, with the Captaincy alternating between the two areas. It arranged one annual match against a County or other Association, plus three other meetings for members each year.

The WNCGA and NWCVLGA amalgamated on 12 January 2026 to form the Welsh Northern Counties Ladies Golf Association. All the events previously arranged by the two associations continue, with the Captaincy alternating between the two county areas as before. There is no longer any age restriction on joining, but Senior 70+ prizes are still included in some of the competitions.
